Listening is expansive, multisensory, somatic and relational.
The workshops developed through Listen Gallery explore listening as an artistic practice. They bring together sound, voice, movement, breath, attention, imagination and the body, creating different ways into listening as creative resource.
The work has grown through years of workshops, performances, collaborations and collective experiences at Listen Gallery, alongside different spiritual and philosophical approaches to listening, ancestral knowledge, sound practices and the many people who have passed through the space.
Each workshop moves through a series of movements for listening. These can be physical, sonic, internal or collective. They begin with grounding and sensory awareness, move into vibration and voice, explore the relationship between the body and its surroundings, and develop into forms of collective listening and response.
Listening can become a movement between the inner and outer world, between silence and sound, between the individual and the collective. Techniques can emerge through breath, voicing, humming, rhythm, gesture, movement, field recording, objects, environmental sound, writing, drawing and other forms of attention.
Every workshop is developed through the practice itself and can shift depending on the people, place, environment and intentions of each project. The facilitation creates space for experimentation and improvisation, allowing each group to develop its own rhythm and discover different ways of listening, making and relating.
Workshops can be developed for artists, communities, students, organisations and other groups, and can take place at Listen Gallery, in other spaces, outdoors or remotely.
